By James Ratcliff

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 game director Naoki Hamaguchi said that the upcoming finale of the FF7 Remake saga was in the last phases of its development and that it remains "almost exactly" on schedule. Hamaguchi also teased fans by stating that they may not have to wait too long before Square Enix can share an update on the finale of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

As of this writing, the official name of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has not been revealed by Square Enix. Although creative director Tetsuya Nomura has decided what Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 will be called, the development team has kept a tight lid on his choice. However, it has since been confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will still be developed on a customized version of Unreal Engine 4, rather than on Unreal Engine 5. The engine choice was due to the familiarity that Square Enix has with the older Unreal Engine iteration. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is also being developed for all modern platforms, with rumors stating that it would be a day-one launch on each supported platform.

Following the successful launch of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, Hamaguchi gave fans an update on the progress of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. In an Automaton interview, the game director noted that progress on the upcoming sequel is going smoothly, and that development is "almost exactly on schedule" with the milestones that were set at the beginning of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. Hamaguchi said, "The game is already in a playable state, and right now, we’re in the final push phase, refining and building up the experience." Hamaguchi said he believes it will not be too much longer before Square Enix can share more details about the FF7 Remake finale.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Will Not Compromise Its Graphics

In light of some concerns Final Fantasy fans had about the upcoming game's graphical quality, Hamaguchi said, "Our decision to go multiplatform with the FFVII Remake series will not in any way lower the quality of the third installment. Our development structure simply doesn’t work that way to begin with." Hamaguchi then discussed how the development team takes each platform's CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage formats into consideration during a project. Although the Xbox Series S console has lower RAM than the Series X and the PS5, Hamaguchi said that they optimize each game to suit the needs of each system, so that memory and storage constraints are not imposed on other consoles that have higher capacities. For storage, Hamaguchi said that the Switch 2's Game-Key Card system is unlikely to affect other platforms since game data does not need to be shrunk down to fit on it.

Roche in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (2)

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming to Switch 2 and Xbox on June 3, some questions were raised about how the Switch 2 could handle the game's open-world format. Hamaguchi said that, by targeting 30 frames per second (FPS) on the Switch 2 and Xbox Series S, it becomes easier for higher-end hardware to achieve 60 FPS. Hamaguchi said that density elements and other graphical elements are fine-tuned for each platform to make sure CPU bottlenecks are unlikely. Hamaguchi stated that Square Enix's philosophy of the PC having the highest graphical quality will not change for FF7 Remake Part 3 and that the game's design assets are designed for high-end PCs first before being adjusted for consoles. Hamaguchi said, "We’re at the stage where the quality improves day by day, and each time we play it, the scenery feels different, so it’s genuinely exciting."
