Gary Sinise surprises Navy veteran Bill Day on a Zoom call with the news that his mortgage has been paid off.

For a guy whose primary military experience was playing the role of Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump," actor Gary Sinise has made a superhuman commitment to support of veterans and the military community.

His latest contribution was to participate in the Veterans United Home Loans campaign to salute and support veterans on Veterans Day by paying off the mortgages of former service members.

The home loan company pledged to donate $25 for every "Thank you to your service" posted to Twitter on Veterans Day. That yielded 90,943 tweets which translated to a total of $2,273,575 in paid-off mortgages.

Here's a video describing the program.

The 11 veterans whose mortgages were cancelled got the news via a Zoom call from a celebrity supporter of military causes. In addition to Sinise, the callers included actor and Army veteran J.R. Martinez, actor and longtime host of the Washington Memorial Day concert Joe Mantegna, Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry and chef Robert Irvine. Gary Sinise made his call to Bill Day, a Navy veteran and single father of four living in Albany, New York. Check out the moment when Day learns the good news.

Is this campaign also a promotion for the Veterans United Home Loan business? Of course it is. But tell that to the eleven military families who face a much brighter future as they enjoy life in their paid-off homes. They've truly been thanked for their service.
