"Lucy in the Sky," a film loosely based on the strange story of astronaut Lisa Nowak, will be released Oct. 4.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman plays Lucy Cola, the character resembling Nowak. The trailer for the highly anticipated film hints at the emotional workout the role gives Portman.

The director is Noah Hawley, who created the "Fargo" franchise for TV as well as the "Legion" series. He wrote the film's screenplay with Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi.

The cast includes Emmy winner Jon Hamm of "Mad Men," Dan Stevens of "Legion" and "Downton Abbey," Zazie Beetz of "Atlanta" and Ellen Burstyn, an Oscar winner for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore."

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon is among the film's producers.

The release date should help the film's chances at awards time; it will beat the end-of-year rush.

A line in the poster explains that Cola "returns to Earth after a transcendent experience during a mission to space -- and begins to lose touch with reality in a world that now seems too small."

Shuttle astronaut Nowak became an unusual part of space history in 2007 when she was arrested in Orlando. Wearing an adult diaper, she had driven nonstop from Houston to Central Florida to confront Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman at Orlando International Airport.

Authorities said Nowak attacked Shipman with pepper spray. Shipman was then the girlfriend of Nowak's former lover, astronaut Bill Oefelein.

The story inspired the headline "astronaut love triangle," but Oefelein had broken up with Nowak before dating Shipman.

Nowak later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and felony burglary. In 2017, People magazine reported that she was living in Texas and working in the private sector.

Shipman and Oefelein married in 2010.
