'Reacher' Crushes Its Streaming Debut, Gets Renewed for Season 2

Well, that was fast. Just three days after the show's streaming premiere, Prime Video has renewed "Reacher" for a second season. Based on the best-selling Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child, the show is already among the service's top five most-watched shows ever.

Prime Video is available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, so that means that Jack Reacher's reach is truly international in scale. The novels have been translated into 40 languages, so the show's quick renewal makes it obvious that the character has resonated with global audiences.

"Reacher" is yet another success for Prime Video in creating a hit series from a popular series of thriller novels. Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels inspired seven seasons of "Bosch," which took his Vietnam veteran LAPD detective and made the character a Gulf War vet. That series will continue with a spinoff on IMDb.TV later this year.

"Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan," starring John Krasinski, also has been a huge success for the streamer, with two hit seasons and a third coming later this year.

Next up for Prime Video will be "The Terminal List," a series based on former SEAL Jack Carr's novels and starring Chris Pratt as lethal operative James Reece.

Jack Reacher creator Lee Child was delighted by the show's success.

"Partnering with Amazon Studios for season one of 'Reacher' was a total delight -- they had our backs every step of the way, and it really shows, in every line and every frame," Child said in a release. "So I'm thrilled we'll be working together again, for season two. This is very exciting news, and I can't wait to get started. 'Reacher' couldn't be in better hands."

As of the renewal, Amazon reports that "Reacher" was the highest-rated original show ever on Prime Video, with an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars from viewers.

The first season of "Reacher" is based on "Killing Floor," the first book in the series. Alan Ritchson stars as Reacher, who uncovers a complicated small-town conspiracy when he makes a tourist stop in the fictional Margrave, Georgia. First suspected of murder, Reacher collaborates with honest local cops to unravel a mystery that has put the entire town in peril.

Since Reacher is a drifter who encounters a new mystery in a different town for each novel, expect a whole new cast of supporting characters in season 2. That's aside from a likely return of Frances Neagley (played by Maria Sten), a former member of Reacher's military unit who made a surprise appearance in season one. Neagley doesn't appear in the "Killing Floor" novel, but she plays a crucial role in the show, and it makes sense that we'll see her again.

With "The Terminal List," "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" and the streamer's massive "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" series all set for 2022, we probably won't see more "Reacher" until 2023.

But fans who love the new show will be glad to hear that Ritchson wants to keep the show going forever. As he told us last week, "I hope to be 100 by the time I'm done playing Reacher."
