A Marine School of Infantry student is dead and another has been taken into custody after an apparently violent incident took place earlier Tuesday at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.
The San Diego Union Tribune, which first had news about the incident, reported that a stabbing had taken place during a fight among Marine students at the School of Infantry aboard Pendleton.
The Marine Corps' Schools of Infantry, located at Pendleton and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, train enlisted Marines in infantry specialties following their graduation from boot camp.
Capt. Joshua Pena, a spokesman for Marine Corps Training and Education Command, confirmed that an incident was under investigation but did not describe it.
"A [Naval Criminal Investigative Service] investigation has been opened, and is currently ongoing," he said in a statement.
The name of the dead Marine will be released following a 24-hour family notification period, Pena said.
