Lt. Gen. Steven Kwast, Air Education and Training Command commander, challenged training wings to break the old paradigms of training and establish new ones such as making proficiency the constant instead of time, teaching in context of the mission, and give the student control of what, when and how they learn. The 365th Training Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, did that when they fast-tracked New Mexico Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Joshua Sandoval through their avionics fundamentals and electronic warfare courses. Because of his vast amount of experience in aircraft maintenance, having earned an aviation maintenance technology degree from Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, Sandoval was able to finish the courses in 23 academic days, a feat that takes traditional Airmen 90 academic days to complete.
