One of the perks of military life that helps offset such things as moving every two years and deployments is the tax-free shopping service members and their families enjoy at the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES).

This summer, depending on where you live, you might be able to double those savings as AAFES has announced it will offer an additional discount to match local tax savings around back-to-school, tax-free weekends.

Yes, double.

To date, the Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Navy Exchanges have not announced similar offers, although the NEX has announced that from August 1-7, customers will receive 10% off the purchase of apparel, shoes and backpacks when paying with a MILITARY STAR® card. The 10% discount will be taken at the time of purchase.

Currently, AAFES plans to match tax holidays in 16 states and offer a percentage off certain back-to-school items (discounts valid in store only, sorry!). The savings is equivalent to the local tax rate and will apply to items such as clothing, shoes, computers and school supplies.

That's right: Your never-ending list of markers, pencils, glue sticks and more will be a little easier on the wallet this school year if you can take advantage of the special discounts.

"Shopping tax-free is a benefit military shoppers have earned," said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes, the exchange's senior enlisted adviser. "The additional savings during the tax holiday is a way the exchange says 'thank you' to our service members and their families as they prepare for a new school year."

Don't wait to see if your state is participating and when. The first tax holiday is July 19 in Alabama.
