When a spring shower becomes a torrential downpour, driving becomes more dangerous.
The easiest way to help prevent an auto accident is to delay your trip until conditions improve. If you must go out in nasty weather, use extreme caution. These tips from the American Red Cross can help you reach your destination safely.
- Check weather reports to see if an alternate route might be safer.
- Tell someone about your travel plans, and keep an emergency kit with food and supplies in your car, in case you get stuck.
- Make sure you have plenty of gas.
- Take your cell phone and charger.
- Turn your headlights on.
- Drive slowly and allow extra distance for braking.
- Avoid flooded roads and downed power lines.
- If the storm gets too bad to continue driving, pull well out of the way of traffic, turn on your hazard lights and wait it out.
