Jack Reacher Set to Join Jack Ryan on TV

Movie Jack Reacher, meet TV Jack Ryan.

Amazon Prime Video has enjoyed huge success with two seasons of "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" starring John Krasinski and has already ordered season three. This came after Paramount's unsuccessful movie relaunch of the character with Chris Pine in 2014.

Amazon Studios, Skydance Television and Paramount Television Studios (the team behind "Jack Ryan") think they can make lightning strike twice and have ordered a television series based on Lee Child's wildly successful "Jack Reacher" novels.

Paramount had mixed success with a Jack Reacher movie series starring Tom Cruise. The first, 2012's "Jack Reacher," was an inventive throwback to '70s action pictures and a solid success for the studio. This was in spite of complaints from fans of the book series that Tom Cruise was way too short to play Jack. (Spoiler: He is.)

Cruise and the studio then gave "Jack Reacher" writer/director Christopher McQuarrie the keys to the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, and he's gone on to make the two best (and most successful) movies in that series. Cruise and McQuarrie are now shooting two more "Mission: Impossible" movies back-to-back, so they're done with Jack Reacher for now.

A second Cruise try in 2016, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," didn't have the same energy as the first one, so there haven't been many calls for him to return to the role.

So now Jack Reacher gets a fresh start on TV with a team that knows how to make an action show. They've hired Nick Santora (creator of the CBS series "Scorpion") to run the show; the first season will be based on Child's first Reacher novel, "Killing Floor."

Child himself is enthusiastic about the new developments. "It's been great so far, but really, the fun starts here. By now, I know these guys, and Reacher is in the perfect hands, believe me," he said in a press release.

There's no word yet on casting. Since Jack is 6 feet 5 inches tall in the novels, here are seven actors who might be tall enough to take on the part:

  1. Alexander Skarsgård ("The Kill Team," "Battleship"), 6'4"
  2. Armie Hammer ("Free Fire," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."), 6'4"
  3. Joe Manganiello ("Sabotage," "True Blood"), 6'5"
  4. Vince Vaughn ("Dragged Across Concrete," "Hacksaw Ridge"), 6'5"
  5. Ansel Elgort ("Baby Driver," "Divergent"), 6'4"
  6. Chris Hemsworth ("Thor," "12 Strong"), 6'3"
  7. Idris Elba ("The Wire," "Luther") , 6'3"
