Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is finally here, and not only did it break records, bringing in more than 700 million views in its first 24 hours, but it also packed in some major reveals, new threats and subtle clues that hint at a much bigger story ahead for everyones favorite friendly neighborhood wallcrawler.
With 718 million views in its first day hitting the web, the trailer introduced the Hulk, brought in the Punisher and teased a darker turn for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
Here are seven things you may have missed.
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY – Official Trailer (HD)
7. Comic Book References Are Everywhere
Marvel clearly leaned into Spider-Man’s comic book roots with several shot-for-shot recreations.
One of the most obvious is a visual nod to Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man’s first appearance, as he swings through the city carrying a civilian. There are also clear parallels to Amazing Spider-Man #345 during his confrontation with Boomerang and Spider-Man #134 in a tower fight sequence with Tarantula.
These moments aren’t just fan service — they signal that Brand New Day is pulling heavily from classic Spider-Man storytelling while updating it for a modern MCU setting.
6. Organic Webshooters Return
One subtle but important change: Peter may no longer need his web-shooters.
The trailer strongly suggests he’s developed organic webbing — a departure from the tech-based version seen throughout the MCU. That shift aligns more closely with earlier Spider-Man films and certain comic arcs, but it also hints at something deeper happening to Peter physically.
This isn’t just an upgrade. It’s a symptom.
5. A New Wave of Street-Level Villains
The trailer introduces a surprising number of villains — but none of them appear to be the main threat.
We get glimpses of Scorpion, Boomerang and Tarantula, along with what looks like the presence of the Hand and even a possible Tombstone setup. On paper, that’s a crowded field of antagonists — but they all feel like distractions.
That suggests something bigger is happening behind the scenes. My bet is all of these teases appear in a short montage in the first half of the movie, and the real villain is someone else, someone we haven't even seen yet.
4. Hulk Returns — But Something’s Off
Mark Ruffalo is back as Bruce Banner, but notably, we don’t actually see the Hulk.
Instead, Banner appears as a professor helping Peter understand what’s happening to him — and crucially, he doesn’t seem to remember him. That’s a lingering consequence of No Way Home, where Peter’s identity was erased from the world.
There’s also been growing speculation that the MCU could introduce a Grey Hulk variation, and the trailer’s focus on mutation and transformation raises the possibility that Banner may be dealing with his own changes as well.
3. A New Mutation Could Change Spider-Man Completely
This is where things start to get darker.
The trailer heavily hints that Peter is undergoing a biological transformation — one that goes beyond new abilities. Between the organic webbing, heightened senses and brief glimpses of physical changes, the setup closely resembles the “Man-Spider” storyline from the comics and 1990s animated series.
If that’s the direction Marvel is taking, this wouldn’t just be another Spider-Man movie. It would be a body-horror twist on the character — something the MCU hasn’t fully explored before.
2. Punisher Brings a Much Darker Edge
Frank Castle’s arrival may be one of the most important tonal shifts in the trailer.
We see the Punisher go toe-to-toe with Spider-Man in a brutal encounter that feels far more grounded — and violent — than what Spidey typically deals with. At one point, Castle even appears to fire at him at close range, pushing the limits of what a Spider-Man film usually shows.
It’s clear Marvel is trying to merge two very different tones: the lighter, youthful energy of Spider-Man with the gritty, R-rated world of the Punisher.
If done right, that clash could redefine what a Spider-Man movie looks like in the MCU.
1. The Real Villain May Be Hiding in Plain Sight
Despite all the visible threats, the biggest mystery may be the one the trailer barely shows.
Sadie Sink’s character remains largely hidden, but multiple clues suggest she could play a central role in the story. At the same time, the trailer shows multiple people seemingly being controlled or manipulated — their bodies moving like puppets.
That points toward a very specific Marvel villain: Mister Negative.
In the comics, Mister Negative can control others and create a duality between light and dark — a theme that aligns perfectly with the trailer’s focus on transformation and identity.
There’s also speculation around Sink potentially playing X-Men founding mutant Jean Grey or another major character, but introducing a core X-Men figure in a Spider-Man film would be a massive move. A more grounded explanation — like a street-level connection tied to the Punisher or a new villain origin — may make more sense.
Either way, it’s clear Marvel is holding something back.
A Bigger Story Is Taking Shape
On the surface, Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks like a continuation of Peter Parker’s story after No Way Home.
But the trailer suggests something much larger: a story about identity, transformation and what happens when a hero starts to lose control.
With Hulk, Punisher and a growing list of enemies entering the picture, this may be Spider-Man’s most complicated — and dangerous — mission yet.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters July 31, 2026.
