Navy officials have identified the woman who died aboard a ship during a port stop in Spain as Lt. Kaylie Ludwig.

Ludwig, a medical corps officer, was found unresponsive aboard the amphibious transport dock ship Arlington on Tuesday. She was later pronounced dead aboard the ship.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is conducting an official investigation, said Cmdr. Kyle Raines, a U.S. 6th Fleet spokesman.

Ludwig had been assigned to the Arlington since July 2018. She began her Navy career in 2013.

The amphibious transport dock ship was at Naval Station Rota on a regularly scheduled port visit at the time of Ludwig's death.

The Arlington is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. The ship deployed as part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group in December. The ARG is conducting naval operations in Europe and Africa.
