The American Board, also known as the American Board for the Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), is a non-profit organization dedicated to putting qualified professionals in classrooms.

The ABCTE offers an online independent study program that will prepare you to teach. The program is much more affordable than returning to school and can be completed at your own pace. Most students take an average of 10 months from enrollment to certification, with many working full-time jobs while preparing! The program will prepare students to teach the subject(s) of their choice. Subjects offered include elementary education, biology, mathematics, English language arts, and more. The American Board is accepted as an approved route for full teacher certification in 11 different states and some international schools.

The ABCTE is a state approved route to full teacher certification in

  • Arkansas
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Hampshire
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee

Every student deserves an amazing, committed teacher, and it can be you. Should you decide to enroll in the American Board program, you could be in your own classroom by the next school year. The American Board provides an affordable, accessible, and accelerated route to teaching. The teacher certification program is offered online, and candidates can work at their own pace and on their own time. We also have a financial aid program and also offer the option of an installment plan that spreads the payments out over eight months, regardless of whether you qualify for financial aid.

America needs talented, dedicated, and qualified teachers, like you. In recent years, American students have fallen far behind their foreign counterparts academically, specifically in the fields of science and mathematics. On the 2009 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), a worldwide study conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United States ranked 31 in math and 21 in science among 74 other nations tested. In 2011, President Obama issued a call to action challenging the nation to prepare 100,000 science, technology, engineering and math teachers over the next 10 years to support future American success in today’s competitive global economy.

Take your first step towards becoming a teacher, and join the more than 4,000 who have become certified teachers through the American Board program. You too can make a difference for the students in your community!
