Utah Military and Veteran Income Taxes

Military Retiree Income Tax

A non-refundable credit of 4.55% (the state's flat income tax rate) of retired or Survivor Benefit Plan payments offsets Utah's tax on that income.

Active-Duty Income Tax

Active-duty pay follows federal tax rules.

Utah Veteran Property Taxes

Disabled veterans qualify for a reduction in property tax. The maximum reduction in a home's appraised value is $521,620 in 2025. This changes every year. Veterans may multiply this by their disability percentage to determine their appraised value reduction. Surviving spouses may also be eligible.

Active-duty and reserve members with at least 200 days of active service in a year may qualify for a total exemption from real property tax in the year after their service.

Utah Military and Veteran Education Benefits

Military/Veteran Education

Purple Heart recipients are eligible for a tuition waiver at all state colleges.

Veterans who use up all their Post-9/11 GI Bill may be eligible to receive their tuition for the last year of a degree program waived by the state.

Military Dependent Education

Surviving dependents of service members killed in action on or after Sept. 11, 2001, are eligible for a tuition waiver at state schools under the Scott B. Lundell Tuition Waiver for Military Members' Surviving Dependents.
