More than 340 members of the National Guard were dispatched to assist with flooding response in Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa and other states in the Midwest, according to a recent Army release. In Nebraska, more than 300 members of the Nebraska Guard assisted state and local officials with search and rescue operations, food and water distribution and first responder transport, using helicopters, Humvees and tactical trucks. They also airdropped bales of hay for hungry livestock. The Missouri Air National Guard has helped emplace sandbags to control flooding, while the South Dakota Army National Guard has worked with tribal authorities to bring clean drinking water to the Pine Ridge Reservation after flooding washed out a water line.
